Man versus Moose
Usually, the moose wins:
Bruce Brown,
a good friend and riding companion of
ours was returning home from a day ride
to the top of Mt. Washington near North
Conway, NH. It was late in the day,
around 9:00
PM when Bruce had the extreme misfortune
to collide with a "small" 700-pound
moose.
George Fon, a retired
South Burlington Police Officer
was riding ahead of Bruce and noticed
that he no
longer saw Bruce's headlight. Anyone who
rides already knows the sinking feeling
that was
growing in George's stomach as he turned
around and headed back.
George's worst fears were realized when
he came upon the accident site, saw the
downed
bike and Bruce's helmet laying in the
road.
Bruce had mortally wounded the moose,
but was trapped under the it, in a
ditch, and
not able to breathe because of the
crushing weight of the moose.
Bruce would certainly have died that
night had it not been for a group of
local men
("Strong-backs", as Bruce calls them)
who happened along and were able to lift
the moose
off of Bruce. George's police training
was put to the most extreme test as he
administered
first aid and literally kept Bruce alive until
paramedics arrived.
Bruce spent 10 days in intensive care
with broken ribs, a horrible gash on the
back of his
head, neck injuries, and a fairly
serious brain injury. The weeks turned
into months as Bruce
slowly healed and physical therapy
helped him get back on his feet and
eventually,
unbelievably, back on two wheels |
